Of every rupee the Union Government controls, only 76 paise is actually earned — through income tax (21 paise), corporation tax (18 paise), GST (20 paise), customs & excise, and non-tax receipts. The remaining 24 paise is borrowed from markets, small savings, and other liabilities — this is the fiscal deficit.

Income Tax
21% · Includes Securities Transaction Tax. Paid by individuals & HUFs.
Corporation Tax
18% · Tax on profits of domestic and foreign companies. Rate: 22-30%.
GST & other taxes
15% · CGST, IGST, Union share from GST Council pool.
Non-tax revenue
10% · RBI & PSU dividends, telecom licence fees, interest on govt loans.
Union Excise Duties
6% · Mainly on petrol, diesel, tobacco products.
Customs
4% · Duty on imports. Basic customs + cess.
Non-debt capital receipts
2% · Disinvestment proceeds + loan recoveries from states & PSUs.
